Midi Input falls over
Hi I'm haviing trouble using a Yamaha PSS 580 keyboard for note input. It does one of three things
a) nothing, even though midi input is setup, ive highlighted a rest and pressed the 'N' then a note on the Keyboard
b) a message that I have not selected a note when I have
c) gives multiple spurious notes at the position of the last one.
Nor generally is it moving the cursor along the stave as you try to input notes, though some times it does but only once.
The attachment gives you a screen dump of what I get. it includes the random notes though I was putting in middle C every time, and you can just see a ghost of a note and ledger lines that you hae with normal mouse input.
I get this both on Version 1 and the updated version 1.1
System is XP running on an Athlon 3000 machine.
Having previously got on reasonably well with Mouse input this problem is driving me crazzy. I'm not sure if its a bug or something set up wrong or not even set up. I've worked through the tutorials on the net. On the keyboard I've turned off everything but a simple sinewave output, No reverb,vibrato, automatic chords or anything like that.

I got a solution in the end. For the technically minded its all to do with the shape of digital signal comming from the keyboard, and can be a combination of this and a cheep interface cable.
Older designs of keyboards do not necessaraly have the fast clean wave shape that modern computers require, so the conputer jitters in trying to interprete the signal and throws all sorts of garbage on the stave. ( think of it as running down a steep hill, when are you in the top half and when have you got to the bottom half, your too busy trying to stay on your feet to work it out but if you had to you could. With modern computers its like jumping off a cliff by comparison, either your at the top or your at the bottom, whilst your in flight you definately cant work out where you are. This problem can be made worse by some interface cables that just convert the voltage of the signal coming from the key board. The expensive ones sharpen up the shape of the signal as well which is what you need.
If you have a realy old keyboard like mine then even this is not good enough. In the end I had to change the sound card in my PC for one with and old fashioned 15 pin game port. These were designed for joysticks that used mechanical switches and so can work with the slower wave shapes.
I hope this helps anybody who is strugling to get the notes on the stave.
