Notes with different duration on the same beat

I am having trouble using voices ... at least that's what I think I need.

I have a 4/4 measure that starts with two quarter note chords. It then has a half note chord that consists of two half notes and a quarter note on the same beat. This then is followed by another quarter note.

However, I can't seem to get the quarter note to live on the same beat as the two half notes. It also won't let me add a quarter note after the half note, since the two quarter chords and the half chord make up the entire measure. This is what I'm trying to create.

When I go to the beginning of the measure and hit voice 2, it puts a green background behind that first quarter chord, but if I advance to the half chord, it goes back to voice 1. If I go to that half chord, one of the notes is blue, and if I then hit voice 2, it turns THAT note green. What I want is the two notes in the half note chord to stay in voice one and then to add a quarter note to the same beat in voice 2, followed by another quarter note. But it's just not working.

Can anyone help me figure out what I'm doing wrong?

Many thanks.

On voice 1 play the C# C# E D on voice 2 do the other notes. then click the C#'s and type X to change the stems to the direction you want. It will look and play exactly what you want.

That works in this case, but won't in others - for instance, if there are beamed notes (the beams won't align). Also won't necessarily work if the chord contains adjacent notes - now the stems won't align. The more general way to do this is to enter all the voice 1 notes first (in this case, the quarters) then the voice 2 notes. It is true you can simply cursor over to the third beat in voice 2 - you need to enter that voice left to right just as you do voice 1. So first enter a half rest, which you can then mark invisible by pressing "V", and now you can enter the half note chord.

I was giving Tim a solution to a specific application. I would have actually entered all of the notes up to and including the 1/2 notes as 1/4 note chords. I would have clicked one of the notes I wanted to be 1/2 note, clicked the other one and pressed 2 to change them to voice 2 notes and then pressed 6 to make them 1/2 notes. There would be a rest for the last 1/4 note in voice 1 and there would be no voice 2 rests to hide. If you change a note to other than voice 1 that is not on the first beat then no rests are produced before the note, but they are produced after the note in the new voice.

I felt my initial solution was the easiest for someone who doesn't know what they're doing and also left no rests to hide.
