Problem w/chord names

• Jan 14, 2012 - 18:22

Problem w/chords. Use iPad for music so need one page scores. Space gets tight sometimes-especially w/lyrics added.
1-Chord names set high above staff line. Fix by manually dropping down individual chord names which is time-consuming & often uneven. Is there a way to set the chord names lower?
2-Even though the chord font in the general style is changed, MuseScore doesn't recognize change when entering new chord names. To make it work I have to complete the score, right click on a chord name, select text properties from pulldown menu, change font on next screen & then check box next to apply on similiar elements. Again, time-consuming & sometimes selected chord names fail to change making it necessary to go back & individually change individual chord names
Attached a file for viewing.
Greatly appreciate any help with both issues.

ad 1: Menu -> Style -> Edit Text Style... -> Chordname -> Y: change from -4 to e.g -1
ad 2: At the same spot you could change the font for chordnames, but AFAIK this isn't used, instead it uses whatever font is defined in the configured chord description files like stdcords.xml

And you have forgotten the attachment ;-)

Thanks for your help.
I actually didn't forget the attachment, I couldn't get the MuseScore file uploaded as an attachment. It was a short, sample score but the computer kept going without finishing the upload.

I am very excited to try your suggestions.
Much thanks!

It's not enough to "Choose File" to upload an attachment - you have to also hit the "Attach" button. *Then* you can hit "Save".

Some more things to know about chords:

There are different "chord styles" you can use; you can select between them via Style->Edit General Style->Chordnames. All but "stdchords" are hardcode to use MuseJazz as the font face, but you can still control the size via the Text Style dialog mentioned above. Note "jazzchords.xml" actually blows up the chords larger than the specified size. It's retained for historical compatibility, but "cchords_muse.xml" is intended to replace it for most purposes.

Changes made in the Text Style don't affect chords already entered right away, but they will show upon reload.

You can move chords that have already been entered by selecting one, right clicking and selecting all similar elements, then ctrl-drag.

Due to how chords are rendered , change made to existing chords using Text Properties don't work. The chords will disappear, then reappear in their original state upon reload.

The default position of the chords was chosen so they wouldn't clash too badly with a high C (treble clef). At least, in the Jazz Lead Sheet template. Other templates may have different defaults, as may the "house" style (the style applied to scores created from scratch). MuseScore doesn't currently let you edit the house style, but I think 2.0 might?

Hopefully this will help you figure out whatever you are doing wrong with regard to your second point. In general, changes made to chord style - both general and text - definitely *do* affect chords not yet entered.

Hi, Marc.
Appreciate your help.
Your tip lead me to discovered a chord style that works for me. I'd tried changing the default chordname style & I wasn't able to get it done right. Happy to report that this time I selected a different chord style & successfully made it my new default style on the general style menu. This is definitely a MAJOR time saver & looks so much better.

Much thanks for helping me out,
Kaye
