Staff spacing

• Mar 24, 2012 - 02:05

I am new at this and I'm working on a ten page piece that has 4 voice staffs. The 1st page came out fine with 2 staffs on it, however, the 2nd page which should have 3 staffs on it has a staff at the top and one at the bottom with a big vacant space in between. Page 3 has 3 staffs on it. I need to find out how to adjust so that each page, except for page 1, has 3 staffs on them. Thanks for your help. I'm using version 1.1 in a windows 7 platform.

See this page in the Handbook: http://musescore.org/en/handbook/layout-and-formatting, and also this tutorial: http://musescore.org/en/node/15668.

Basically you need to either shrink the overall size of the staves (layout / page settings) or else the space between staves (style / edit general style / page). Probably rhe reason you have different numbers of systems n different pages is different amount of space taken up by lyrics in different systems, and your settings have you right on the edge between being able to fit two versus three systems on a page.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I'm reluctant to ask how you did it, but if you are so inclined you might tell me for future attempts. If not, that's OK too. Thanks again.

I spoke too soon. When I tried to print the score the bass line of the bottom staff was cut off on several of the pages. There seemed to be an abundence of space between the middle staff and the upper & lower staffs. How can I adjust that space?

Have you read the handbook pages that I pointed you to, or watched Michael's tutorial on page layout? Spacing is controlled by the staff distance, system distance, and page fill threshold parameters under Style->Edit general Style, with overall size controlled by the "space" parameters under Layout->Page Settings.
