moving around the score-- blue thingee disappears
I don't know what the name is of the blue square that moves you around the score, but this is definitely yet another bug. The whole score disappeared, and the blue thingee is locked inside the gray area. When I close the file, I can bring back the score again, but then the blue thingamajig (there seems no explanation of it anywhere) disappears. It seems to be one or the other now. It is already very difficult to move around in the score, since the up and down arrows don't work for that ,and there's no scroll bar either. I can't really continue if the blue square thingee has disappeared TOO.
I don't even know what the purpose of the gray area below the score is anyway. What's it there for? I need more room for the score.

You can move around the score by clicking on an empty portion and dragging. If you want to get rid of "gray area", as you call it, just grab the bar with the circle, and drag it down.
The forthcoming 2.0 release has a scroll bar implemented for pages exceeding the navigator.
Could you provide details on how to reproduce your problem and perhaps attach a score (see this )?
I suppose the blue square is the focus area.
What version and operating system are you using?
Regarding the grey area below the score, it gave me a few ideas :).
I've also seen of situations where the navigator freaks out and you lose your place. The navigator is completely redesigned for 2.0, so hopefully those problems will go away.
Luckily, though, the navigator isn't really needed. Moving around the score is actually quite simple - just use the mouse wheel (or equivalent). By itself to scroll vertically, with shift to scroll horizontally. Also, home / end / page up / page down keys work normally. Plus you can simply click an empty area on the score and drag. So even if you lose your navigator, just hit Home to return to the top of your score (if necessary) than you can scroll around as you like, navigator or no navigator.

I stopped using the navigator some time ago. As Marc says, it is much easier and faster to use all the other methods when each is necessare.
Removing the navigator also freed up more real estate.

"Plus you can simply click an empty area on the score and drag."
That works very well for me, but only under one condition: The note entry mode must be off, or I wind up entering unwanted notes with the mouse. It's actually much easier to use the mouse wheel so that note entry mode doesn't have to be constantly toggled on and off during a lengthy entry. When the end of a line is reached, you can sometimes lose your place, as the entry continues either down on the next line or on the next page at the right. Zooming out to find your place doesn't help if the score becomes too small to read, so this is where scrolling and panning with the mouse wheel helps immensely.
I am glad they are installing scroll bars (I hope for both vertical and horizontal). It is too hard now to move around the score. I don't know yet if the blue navigator square will ever come back in a new score. I use windows vista FWIW.

Do you know about the mouse scrolling functions?
Scroll wheel - up/down
Shift+Scroll Wheel - left/right
Also
Ctrl+Scroll wheel - zoom in/out
Once I discovered these (they are currently undocumented I think) I have been using them in preference to other means of navigation, although I use the inspector for navigating to points several pages away.

I suggest adding them here : http://musescore.org/en/handbook/keyboard-shortcuts under navigation

I have no idea what you mean by scroll wheel.
Anything useful in this program should be documented in the handbook.

Yes anything on earth should be documented. Fortunately, wikipedia is working on it : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scroll_wheel

Thanks, I never used that wheel before. As far as I can tell though, it can only move a document up and down.

On a trackpad, you can move in different directions.

As ChurchOrganist said earlier, if you use the scroll wheel while pressing the shift key, you should see the document moving left and right.

I also pointed that out - wheel to scroll vertical, shift-wheel to scroll horizontally. I also pointed out that home / page up / page down / end keys work. Navigating in MuseScore is actually very easy compared to to, say, Finale, even without the Navigator. And the scroll bars in 2.0 will make it even easier still!

Yes, the navigator does come back. I haven't digured out what casues it to get out of sync, but it does come back upon restart. And as mentioned, there are many ways to navigate without it, so many that I only rarely use the navigator.
