How to tie non-adjacent notes
I have a tied note at the end of Bar 38, tied to the first note in First Time Bar 39.
The second time bar is obviously Bar 40.
I want to tie the same note in bar 38 to Bar 41 which follows the second time bar.
I am using Musescore Version 2.0.3.1 Rev 6347ed6
and Apple MacBookPro operating system OS X EI Capitan Version 10.11.6
Please can someone help me?

Ciao Irene, see: https://musescore.org/en/node/166356
I'm still having difficulty so have uploaded an extract showing the problem.
I use the playback mode to teach the vocalists their part, so at present the first note of Bar 41 is not tied to the last note in bar 38 as it needs to be.
Do I need to produce another score which runs through the entire piece without any repeats?

This doesn't make sense at all to me. Playback of this would never ever jump from 38 to 41, but to either 39 (1st volta) or 40 (2nd volta), so I don't see why you would want to tie from 38 to 41

For the second and third repeats, bar 38 "Wa-" needs to be tied to bar 41 "ter-loo"
Someone said you would never do this, so sorry I just don't know why you wouldn't.
The piece goes up to bar 39 (1st volta), then back to bar 4 for the start of the second verse.
Then right through to bar 40 (2nd volta).
At the end of bar 40 there is a DS taking us back to the Sign which is at bar 12.
Then it goes from Bar 12 through to the end.
Hope this is a bit clearer, I'm not as experienced as some of you obviously are so I apologise if this sounds silly.

You wouldn't do it with the voltas you use, it just doesn't work. You'd need voltas covering 2 measures, not just one

I go running ... enable shows invisible

1st. your measure 40 is wrong
2nd I do that with SLUR between lhe last note of 38 and the 1st of 41, and , after, double click on this slur and drag the left end where you want.
With a slur the play back is wrong, it plays 2 notes Waterloo_-_tie_issue3.mscz

Try the attached, a tie from 39 to 40 and visually moved into 40 only
use two measures.

In this case no voltas are needed at all, as they have the same content

Maybe the chord is changing. Or sometimes the word is different. Or there is another need.
In such cases, it is good to use two measures covering the connected (tied) part.
You understand what I mean, though ...

Yes I do, your example is just bad ;-)
