TACET

Hi!

I would like to add a tacet symbol in a jazz leadsheet, to indicate that i play solo untill band comes in on cue. Don't care about playback, just want to make understandable visually...

I've read that I have to do it via staff text (or system text), but then how do I make it look "right", with that long rest symbol? So far I have a multirest for 24 bars, but I think it make confuse musicians that they have to count.

Best.

I'm not totally clear on what you are looking for - leadsheets don't usually contain indications like this, so I don't really have anything to visualize. But if you want to create something that looks like a multimeasure rest symbol, try a Line from the palette, then customize its thickness, and maybe add the vertical strokes separately. Not sure it's worth the trouble, though - a simple empty measure seems like it would accomplish the same.

Thank you for reply.

I may not be sure myself. I will have to play a tune without rehearsing, it's critical that musicians understand what I mean and the score doesn't look lame.

May I ask you what are good ways to indicate that i'm playing solo (intro, A, A1), then bass joins on B, on my cue. Should I just make a empty bar and write all that stuff as text or there's a better way?

It's hard to say without knowing more about the music in question. But normally, I think of a leadsheet as providing all necessary information in the same form for all players. So if you are playing an intro, I'd expect the lead sheet to contain the actual intro (or the basis you are using for improvisation). Othewise what are describing is an "arrangement" - each player has a different part.
