Anticipated (pickup?) note within a repeated section

• May 5, 2017 - 11:14

Hello,

suppose I have an introduction (chords only, without a melody), repeated 4 times, followed by a theme. I know how to have musescore repeat my intro. The theme starts one beat early however. Normally, I could create a pickup measure with one beat to do that, but here I have an introduction before the theme, so the first note of the melody actually occurs on the last beat of the intro (4th and last repetition).

Can I explain this to musescore?

Thanks!

Put a volta that will be used 1-3 times, then the "second" volta after the repeat that is used the 4th time to show the different ending of the intro? I'm guessing the intro usually has 4 beats before the repeat, but has only 3 beats the last time through. If all 4 repetitions have the same 3 beats, then as Jojo said, split the last measure before the last beat using the edit->meausres->split... menu item.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't understand how splitting would help though.
I usually don't want to use a volta for just one poor note on the last 4th beat. Usually, this note is displayed between parenthesis, and the musicians understand that it's the theme beginning "early".

I was hoping to have a way of telling musescore "play this note only the last time you repeat"...

If the first 3 times through, the intro has a rest on beat 4, then the volta is standard music notation. If the expectation is that the 4th beat be ignored, that it, start the first measure the beat after beat 3 before the repeat, then splitting the measure is standard notation. I have not seen a note in parentheses to tell someone it is played the final time only. MuseScore does not have that option on playback. Depending on which of the two above expectations you have there is a work around for both, but they are quite different in implementation by using invisible items that will play back as you want.

Finally, after a few different failed attempts...It looks good and plays correctly. To see what I did, select a note and press the right arrow to see how I hid and moved notes and rests. You will also need to use the arrows at the bottom of the measure properties to see some of the measure, since it is nearly impossible to click on them. Also, I have Show invisible turned off, you will want to turn it on.

The good thing about MuseScore is that you only need to make one line look good and all of the others will follow.

You will want to write enough music to fill the entire lines before and after the repeat. Then use New Line characters to set the position of the line with the repeat because allowing the lines length to adjust will make the moved notes move again and you will essentially have to start over on the placement of weird items.
