Volume changes between measures, without any markings

• Sep 26, 2013 - 22:03

Hello,
I am very new to MuseScore, so pardon this if I've missed something obvious. I'm trying to create some files to assist my chorus learn their music - by highlighting a single vocal line among the others. (That's by way of background, so you'll understand why the tenor line in this file is so different.)

I imported this file from a midi, and have cleaned it up. It plays mostly as expected, except the dynamics are all wacky! If you play the attached file, for example, there is a big change between measures 12 and 13. But I don't see any reason why that should be happening.

It's good you mentioned it was imported from midi.

I checked the note properties (right click on a note head to open a popup menu, then open 'Note Properties') and changed the 'velocity type' from 'user' to 'Auto' for all the notes in the score (by first selecting 'All Similar Elements' in the popup menu I referred to earlier).
'Velocity' is a midi catchword for 'volume'.

I noticed the tenor line volume was turned up in the Mixer. That was probably for 'highlighting a single vocal line among the others', as you stated. Yes?

The file is attached. I hope this is what you meant.

Regards...

Aha! Thank you - I remember seeing the "velocity" setting in the properties window, but I didn't know that was a volume setting! Now I understand!

Yes, the tenor was turned up in the mixer because I wanted it to stand out for the tenors. I'm planning on making an MP3 for each vocal part, with that part altered so it is easier to hear.

Velocity is not a volume setting - it is how hard the key of the synth playing that note is struck.

In MuseScore that is currently the only way to change dynamics.

In MIDI there are 3 ways of controlling the loudness of a note.

Volume - usually used for balancing channel (track) levels
Expression - used for dynamic control during sustained sounds
Velocity - used for dynamic control of the Attack phase of the envelope generator.
