How do I separate the L and R hand parts of an imported piano MIDI file.

Hi,

I'm new to MuseScore and I'm looking forward to using it, and to interacting here on the forums. Right away I have what is probably a real 'newbie' question :)

In the handbook it said that when you open a MIDI file a MIDI Import Palette becomes visible, but I haven't been able to find it. Can someone please tell me where this is located? I'm running Windows 7, and the thought crossed my mind that different operating systems may or may not have this feature.

The handbook also said that the Palette has an operation to split the left and right hands of a piano part. Presently, everything I import is squeezed onto one treble staff.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

In version 1.3 you simply go to "File" and then "Open". (I'm in Windows). Below the file list there is a place for file name and to the right a drop down box that originally says "All Supported File (...)". At this point your MIDI file should show up (if you are in the correct directory). If in the process of looking for it you need to narrow it down, click on the "All Supported File (...)" drop down and select "Midi", which will show only MIDI files.

It should be noted that MIDI does not tell you where the notes should be placed on a staff, particularly when it comes to piano (or any multi-staffed instrument.) MIDI key 40 is "middle C". Is that right hand "middle C" or left hand "middle C?" You can translate a MIDI file into notation, but don't expect it to do what you think it should in any program.
