Files saved in the nightly builds unable to be opened by the original musescore?
After giving up on trying to make Musescore behave on my current os, I downloaded one of the nightly builds. After saving a pre-existing .mscx file in the nightly build, I tried to open it in the original musescore but promptly was told that my current edition is too old to open the file. This is non-sense as I have the latest edition of Musescore.
Does this mean that file is forever doomed to only be opened by the nightly build musescore? :(

Correct. That's one of many reasons why there are so many warnings (when you download, also each time you start up) that the nightly builds are not meant for serious work - just for experimentation.
If you didn't save a backup copy of the file - and MuseScore normally would have done so automatically, so look for that (might be hidden, don't know how that works on your OS - you could try exporting as MusicXML using a nightly and then importing into 1.3.

Is there anyway to reverse this? Exporting it as a xml results in the score having a bunch of strange symbols (which isn't THAT bad, but it'd be annoying to have the get rid of all of them etc)

What kind of strange symbols? Posting an example would help. Could be a bug in the nightly build export, in which case, submitting it as an issue would be the first step to getting it fixed - and then maybe a future nightly build would be able to export it better.

It depends. If the MuseScore file format doesn't change until next release, your file will open just fine in the future MuseScore 2.0.
