icon for all .mscz, .mscx is blank page, and taskbar icon is hard to read when install MuseScore via Windows Store

• Mar 28, 2018 - 01:11

I installed MuseScore 2.2 via Windows Store (and uninstalled the .msi version) and rebooted my computer. When I open my Documents, I see all the .mscz and .mscx files have blank page as icon. Double clicking on them correctly opens MuseScore:

But I was hoping that there would be a nice musescore icon automatically by default on installed. I should note that MusicXML files which I've previously associated with MuseScore still have a nice musescore icon.

Also the musescore icon when added to taskbar is not ideal. The musescore trademark takes up too little space, and instead there is a big thick blue border taking up all the space, so it is hard to identify that the icon actually represents musescore:

I'm not really sure about the file icons (and @ericfontainejazz won't know at all, as he didn't have the 2.1 store version installed prior to the 2.2 store version: "I installed MuseScore 2.2 via Windows Store (and uninstalled the .msi version)"), but am 100% sure about the taskbar icon. as at first I though that icon had vanished completly after the upgrade

I can't remember how exactly I had installed 2.1, but it sounds like you've figured out a solution for the .mscz/x, so I won't worry about that.

However, back to the issue of the icon for Taskbar, I just noticed that the icon in the start menu also has the problematic blue boarder:

Searching online I don't see anyone else with the issue, so I don't know what is going on there.

The above pic happened when I did a Search in start menu.

However if I just open my start menu and see recent apps, looks like:

The interesting thing is the other apps like "Mail" and "Steam" have blue boundaries in that start menu. But in the taskbar snapshot from earlier, you will notice they don't have blue boundaries. Maybe there is some flag to set whether use transparent background or use blue border???

Funny thing is Kodi (which I've installed via Windows Store) in the Start Menu does not have a blue boundary:

Screenshot (222).png

However if you look in the earlier snapshot of my taskbar, the Kodi icon does have a blue boundary. But their blue boundary in the taskbar isn't quite as thick as MuseScore's. It is almost as if the MuseScore icon got the blue boundary effect applied twice when in the taskbar, but only once in the startmenu.

I've discovered from:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/uwp/design/shell/tiles-and-not…

That they refer to this boundary effect as "Plated". So what we want for MuseScore would be "unplated":

I'm also skimming a msdn help forum whereby someone wanted to make "Unplated" icons...so maybe see if you can glean any info from that:

Thank you for the details! We use very poor icons set with the same small icon and big (transparent?) borders. Anyway, I don't want to change things significantly for this release since I know something about the absolutely new icons set for 2.3 which is fully aligned with the Microsoft store requirements and so on... I will fix the bug with .mscz/,mscx icons and leave others as they are.

Feature request section? It is definitely a bug. Microsoft changed the rules for distributed icons, so I had to add ones more. Investigating...

I thought if I were to post to "bug" section, then I would get some people saying "no this isn't a bug" because I'm asking for musescore's windows store app to do something it doesn't already do. I didn't know if previous windows store app had the icons/taskbar working correctly. I find a lot of times is no win situation whether post as "bug" or "feature request" because people always debate. Sometimes in these situation, I don't think it matters what it is called.

I've updated Microsoft Store app, so the icon for mscz/mscx files is here. Taskbar issue won't be solved until 2.3 is released with new icons set.
