Slur help.

I was writing out a song and I was inputting vocals and I wanted to extend the length of it so I put a slur in and connected it to the note I wanted to extend and tried to drag it to where I wanted it to end, but it was still connected via a dotted line to the first note of the next bar. Anyone know how to remedy this?
