Using an external MIDI device
Hi!!!
I use MuseScore 2.2.1 into UbuntuStudio 16.04 LTS (Linux).
I tried top use my external Casio MIDI keyboard to enter notes into MuseScore but... There is not any "clue" about the system recognize the MIDI device.
I assume that it is my fault because there should be something I missed, but... I don' have any clue about what it is!!!
Can somebody help me, please???

Did your first connected your midi keyboard before you started MuseScore?
Is installed the application "portaudio" on your system?

Excuse me because the delay. It's a long weekend here, so I left my house, for a while (hihihi)
I don't know any about "portaudio" app. But... I can use my external MIDI Casio keyboard with Rosegarden and an old Windows MIDI software (even through JACK!!!), so... The linux system is recognizing my keyboard.
The problem is just with MuseScore: I can not to get MuseScore recognize any note input from my MIDI keyboard and I can not to get MuseScore plays something through that external device.
Well, I have to say that MuseScore can play anything written into any music score with the internal SoundFont player very fine!!! And I love the Symphonic Traditional Instruments sounds from the SoundFont files.
But... I need some specific sounds from my external MIDI devices (not traditional instrument sounds) and I need to control it from within MuseScore. That what I want to do.
So... What I missed here???
BTW: I don't agree to call the MuseScore Synthesizer as "Synthesizer" because it doesn't synthesize any, it just plays the sounds from the SoundFont files. SO... Why not to call it as what it really is: a "SoundFont Player"???

Note you don't need to use MIDI input in order to use MIDI output, and vice versa. So you can playback through your keyboard even if you don't use it for input.
Go to Edit / Preferences / I/O, and make sure your keyboard is selected as the Input or Output device, or both.
BTW, even playing a soundfont does involve synthesis - shaping the sound in terms of attack, sustain, decay, release, etc. The vast majority of MIDI devices sold or marketed as "synthesizers" are actually starting from sample playback, at least since around the mid-1990's this has been true.

I don't use Jack, so I can't give you further assistance therefore. Probably there are several ways to connect a midi keyboard with MuseScore - depending of the sound system. Maybe you'll figure out the settings for the midi device used inside Rosegarden to know, what you need to adjust in the I/O dialogue of MuseScore.
But for me it works fine by using PortAudio combined with Alsa (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Linux_Sound_Architecture).

Now I changed to PortAudio, at Preferences panel, and now... ALL IS WORKING SO FINE!!!!!!!!!
Well, not 100% perfect, but it is because something not related to MuseScore. It is about my Casio MIDI keyboard needs some extra tricks to select the sounds I need, because it doesn't follow the Standard MIDI bank-sound correlation. I mean... If I want to get an specific Square Wave sound in my Casio keyboard, I need to specify another instrument into Musescore (not Square Wave). But... As I need it just this time... It doesn't a big deal to me, hehehehe.
