Using fingering numbers for Bass and Mandoline Score
I'm using the 4 string score for bass guitar and mandoline. How do I get the fret number to stay on the string. I've highlighted the measure/ double click the number to drag to the correct stringbut it won't stay.

Read https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/tablature. You're going about it all wrong.
And you've been given that answer in https://musescore.org/en/node/282811#comment-890671 already

You do not have to double-click to get this.
If we are talking about the case where we have left the input mode (so, in normal mode), you can change the fret numbers with the up/down arrow keys, in conjunction with the Shift+Alt keys for moving on other string.
And if you want the same note, but on another string/fret, use the Ctrl + Up/Down keys.
In the latter case, using the mouse (simply drag) can be an alternative.

But only on a TAB staff, not on a normal staff reduced to 4 lines...
