Two versions of MuseScore, one piece
My daughter is trying to send a composition to a teacher. The version of MuseScore on which the piece was written is the most updated and recent version. The version installed in the school studio is older - MuseScore2. The teacher has tried to play it but can't and has asked whether the piece can somehow be imported into MuseScore2 and re-sent to her. Can that be done and if so, how?
Thanks.

Open your file in MuseScore 3.
From within MuseScore 3 use menu item: File -> Export... -> and then in the 'Save as type' drop down box select MusicXML.
This format can be opened in both MuseScore 2 and MuseScore 3.

We'll try that and cross our fingers that we can make it work. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.

It will definitely work, but do not some formatting info tends to be lost in the translation through MusicXML.
Meanwhile, MuseScore is free, and MuseScore 2 & 3 can happily coexist, so no reason the school can't just install MuseScore 3 too.

I think I can add a little insight to this. Having worked in a school setting since before the computer era, I have seen the evolution of institutional policy as regards access to software.
For awhile, before every computer in the school board was linked, teachers could install whatever software they liked. It was like the wild west, where floppy disks were traded at in the lunchroom, regardless of the legality.
From that extreme, it went to the other, where the school board would load the server once a year with the minimum license for approved applications. Requests for new software or updates were often lost in bureaucratic rabbit holes. If an update was approved, it would have to wait for the next school year to be applied. We had one version of Finale on our system for several years in a row. The school board simply didn't value the arts enough to invest in updates. Sad, I know, but that was the situation for many years. (The fact that MS is free would just be considered as suspicious, and likely prone to malware.)
It may be possible that the school in question in the OP is satisfied with one version of MS, and just as likely that when they do upgrade to MS3, MS2 will be deleted from the system.

Thank you very much. MusicXML doesn't actually appear in the dropdown menu on my daughter's laptop - not sure if that's an issue with the particular laptop - but she has saved via other means that were offered and is hoping one of those will work for the teacher. Here's hoping.

It sure does in File > Export, "Compressed MusicXML (.mxl)" and "Uncompressed MusicXML (.musicxml)" (that latter is "Uncompressed MusicXML (.xml)" in older versions of MuseScore)
