Chord names above notes change dynamics
On compositions that have previously sounded OK , the presence of a chord name (C, F, G etc) above the stave is now interpreted as an ff below the stave. This causes unwanted stresses over the first note or chord in the bar that were not there before. Select and delete all elements returns the melody to how it sounded previously.

Can you attach a sample score where the chord symbol is interpreted as ff?

Thanks for your interest. See attached file. The effect becomes really pronounced at Bar 21. When I delete all chord notation, it then sounds as it should. This is a recent phenomenon that has coincided with the latest release of MuseScore 3. It's not a disaster, but it's unwelcome.

Chords are played automatically.
I think that's the reason.

My understanding of the Ctrl+k function is that it allows the user to add the name of the chords for information purposes only. The piece didn't sound like this (i.e. with the extra emphasis on the first notes/chord of each bar) before the recent update.

In 3.5 those chord symbols do sound, unless you switch this off, see https://musescore.org/en/faq#faq-308797
