a peculiar bar composition
I'm having great difficulty replicating this. It seems like a quaver out and maybe I just can't see it. can someone show me what I'm doing wrong? thanks

That is a triplet, as far as I can see. Three sixteenth notes instead of two, in the place of one eighth note.

that's what I thought but there is a quaver left over in the bar. so I think it will be a tuplet. Cheers for good ideas.

It is a triplet! There is no quaver (= eighth note) left over. The bar is supposed to have six eighth notes:
1. C
2. an eighth note / quaver rest
3. a sixteenth note triplet (D, E, D).
4 and 5. A quarter note: C
6. A

Jojo how gorgeous that answer was and so intuitive of you. thanks for answering this. It's looking fabulous. My first experience at quintuplet and joining a beam. wow.

@mpvick
Sorry to insist on this, but there is no quintuplet involved. This is a triplet, on beat 3 of 6 beats:

thx I couldn't get the triplet to work as the last quaver wouldn't appear. I tried it. I could only get the quintuplet to work. I'll attach it.

These steps are not the order in which you would normally do it. But just try following the example and it will produce the correct notation:
Then you can change beats 2 and 3 to the beaming you want.
