Playback unavailable even after multiple resets

I have been through many threads but its still not working

Windows 10
Musescore 3
USB earphone adapter (is this a known incompatibility?)

Without the usb adapter, playback seems to work fine but due to a separate problem, I'm not able to hear my computer audio so I can't use the program like that. Bluetooth devices seem to work fine but those aren't at my disposal.

When I open i/o preferences, no matter how many times I press, the list never drops down with all my audio devices

I have
> restarted audio devices
> reverted to factory settings
> re-installed musescore
