You know I am working a Greek translation but...you came first!
I am Assistant Professor in the Ionian University in the Music Department and we have big interests about Musescore.
I would like to work with you to make this translation better and better. Me and my colleague Pr. Panagiotis Vlagopoulos are interested to make some new translations in some music terms which we thing they are not quite good translated till now. Please contact me if you are interested to work together.

The Greek translation is almost ready thanks also to the work of thetrojan01!
We are fixing some bugs and we are testing it now. I thing that it will be ready in a few weeks from now.
We will go ahead with the translation of the Mscore manual.

Hi jiannis,
You can (should) translate the manual on the musescore.org website. The greek language is now active so you can translate all the musescore.org content right on the website.
In order to learn how the translation process works:

All the other menu & handbook pages are translated in the exact same way.

I am really trying to follow the steps you are explaining to me but somehow i can't!

# hit the translate tab and 'add' the missing Greek translation by following the 'add translation' link
There is nowhere to find the translate tab!
One more question to you: could you translate the following strings and leave them in a comment?

Of course I can do it! it is no problem!
My problem now is this:
I am working with Linix Mint.
I have downloaded as you told me the unstable pre release of 0.9.6 rev. 2148
i added in the folder our translation and i choose the System language (Greek) by the Preferences menu. That have work with the 0.9.5 Release but it dosen't work with the 0.9.6 rev. 2148.
I have solved an menu problem by editing the code (some kind of a problem with &Notes) ...and...
I am not sure that i have understood the hole process here. I am totally confused!
for the only thing that i am sure is that i have don a translation, i have checked it with the 0.9.5 and everything was working except the Notes palette.
What can i do now to finish these job so i can make a last quality check with my colleagues and send our Greek release?

Sorry for the confusion. I was under the impressive that I granted you permissions to translate to Greek. Apparently not. Lasconic fixed that.
Regarding the translation of the strings, indeed, just provide them in a comment.
Concerning the ts file: whatever you have currently, attach it the ts file to a comment and I'll check it out what the problem is. As far as I understand, your translation is based on an old revision and you are afraid that the latest new strings will not be added to it. Normally, we commit the ts file and then run a command so new strings are added and outdated strings are removed. But don't worry. Just attach it and we'll go on from there.

Dear Tomas,
Thank you very much for your help and i am really sorry if i cause you all here a headache! I am just trying to understand your work system so i can inform my colleagues and start slowly to give our help in the project!
What do you thing is better?
We have to do on the translation file a few minor changes more. Is it better to give it to you first to compile it in a newer version and the do the hole new things or just to finish the changes now and than give it to you?

You can do both if you want: upload the ts file and keep on going with the translation. In the meantime, we'll try to sort out the translation problem with the MuseScore trunk.

As you will see, the forum titles & descriptions are currently in English. Could you post the translation of the forum titles & descriptions in a comment?

By the Greek translation forum i have put an add announcing the coming release of the Greek translation of the Music Department of our Universlty. As soon it will be ready, the MuseScore will be the first notation editor tranlsated in the Greek language (Finale and Sibelius dosent have greek language support)! Is it possible to put this add on the Greek start site? http://www.musescore.org/el like in other languages happens?
The second matter:
Can you explain me which is the leader tem of MuseScore? I thing that soon we have to inform all about some good thing that we are preparing for the hole project!

Hi jiannis,
Yes, Greek posts can be featured on the front page. The process in order to do so: make a post in the Greek forum and leave a short message in this forum to request that the post can be promoted to the front page.
I think it's indeed terrific news that MuseScore is the first notation software to support Greek. It's once again a testimonial that open source has many advantages over proprietary software. On the other hand, it's important to be aware that MuseScore is still a young open source project and therefore still has a long way to go to match the stability and functionality of Sibelius and Finale. I would even dare to say that this is not even the goal of MuseScore. Rather have a good decent basic notation editor than an unstable bloated piece of software.
In case you have some news you wish to share privately, you can contact each MuseScore member via their profile page on which you will find a contact form (see the contact tab). You can reach us all at once via the developer mailing list.

Thanks again for all your information!
i ve just want to inform you that we have a meeting next week 3 professors from the Music Department and another 2 from the Informatics Department of the Ionian University to create a team which will work for the MuseScore Project. Our intention is to discuss it also to the general council of our departments and take an official decision for our support and our participation in the project. We can offer of course much more things than just a Greek translation in the project.
Thats why it could be great if we could know from the project developers in which topics we could help that could give us a guide line for the beginning. We are open in any suggestion.

Hi jiannis,
This is excellent news. I'll track the Greek forum in order to follow your news.
Regarding the topics for which MuseScore can benefit support, I'll point you to the developer mailing list which is holds many larger topics that should be tackled in MuseScore. Recently I wrote a short post on things we might tackle at FOSDEM in Brussels (BE). This might be our very first real life code sprint. The main challenge is to do things which might benefit the cause to attract new developers, such as MuseScore model documentation, plugin framework and more. Anyway, I'll try to compile a list of the main & larger issues that are raised on the mailing list and in the forum. Obviously, there is also the issue tracker which holds many small and large issues as well.
A wild suggestion would be to host a MuseScore workshop/conference in Greece ;-) There is currently an ongoing effort to host a workshop in Belgium by the end of 2010 and gather up to 30 music teachers who can get introduced to MuseScore. It's very early so I can't give more info yet. Anyhow, by that time MuseScore might be past the magical 1.0 stadium. Fingers crossed.

Per request here are instructions for testing your translation using a prerelease.
C:\Program Files\MuseScore 0.9\If you want to continue to use the stable release you may want to change the location to a different folder.localefolder..tsfile using Qt Linguist as normal. This time use File > Release As and save the.qmin thelocalefolder that you found in step 3 aboveIn reply to Greek translation by ionio_jiannis
Regarding the handbook, it is important to translate it using the website as Thomas mentions above. The translation on the website is used to automatically create the PDF manuals included with the software. Translating the handbook elsewhere will create more work later on.
I have a question. how can i transport my translation in a newer revision without writing the hole thing again?
Since there is no version of Musescore with Greek support there is no file to base my work and add only the new items and not doing it from the beginning.
My translation file is revision 628, its pretty old i thing! :-)

The current mscore_el.ts is here.
Using Qt Translator, you can try phrase books to keep your old translation.
Hopefully we will have a powerful translation server soon and it will be easier to maintain a translation.

Good morning dear people!
A master degree student of mine named ionio_niki is added as user since yesterday. Is it possible to give her access to the manual translation? She -and some more people- will work for the project too. I have already explained her how it goes so she is ready to start working.
Another question,
Is there a deadline for the 0.9.6 release? It would be good to know so we can organise our work. The target is to have the software translation and the manual translation ready till then!

Good morning jiannis,
Translation permissions are granted to ionio_niki.
Regarding 0.9.6: so far we didn't work with deadlines to release new versions, but rather we define a code freeze time during which no more features are added and outstanding (critical) bugs are fixed. During that time, we do a call to translators to update the translation as much as possible and align the translated documentation with the English source.
At this moment, we don't have a code freeze date set yet so it will take at least until spring 2010 before the next release will be out.

A link appears red when the page does not exist. Since you translated all the links on the handbook page first, they will not appear blue until you have translated the corresponding page using the usual methods.
The two methods for translating: Go to the English page that you want to translate; Click on the "Translate" tab, On the line for Greek click on "Add new translation".
Alternatively go to: http://www.musescore.org/en/admin/content/translation_overview_assignme… and click on Greek to see which pages still need translating.
