tab to insert chords not working in 4.0

• Dec 28, 2022 - 01:01

I have to say I love 4.0
Developers done an amazing job bringing to much modern standards
Just not sure if some new behaviour is intended or is a bug...

I used to be able by pressing tab to go to next bar when inserting chords.
In 4.0 doesn't work anymore and once I insert a chord on a bar if I press tab it cycles through the windows menu ...play, metronome...palettes...

has this been noted already and is in the buglist?
Thanks

As noted in various other threads, the shortcut has changed to Ctrl+Right, which is consistent with how "next measure" works in other modes. Tab, as you are seeing, has a special meaning with respect to navigation of the UI itself (as per standard accessibilty guidelines).

As in previous releases, space is every beat or note; semicolon is every beat. It's supposed to be Ctrl+6 to skip by half note, same as in MU3, but a bug is currently preventing this shortcut from working on most keyboards. Should be fixed in an update relatively soon.

There are indeed reports of some keyboards - mostly on macOS (where the shortcut should of course be Cmd+Right) - where for some reason that particular shortcut doesn't get passed by the system to MuseScore properly. In those cases, then you do indeed need a workaround. You can probably customize the shortcut (in Edit / Preferences / Shortcuts) to something else involving Space, semicolon, or the cursor keys, plus one or more modifiers. You want the "Go to next measure" command.

Note that without customization, semicolon is better than space because it moves by beat only without stopping for intervening notes.

I'm just starting with MuseScore 4 after having used MuseScore 3 for many years. I got tripped up on this same thing.

Googling "musescore 4 chords entry" brings me to https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/chord-notation-systems - a "below" link in bullet point 4 leads to https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/chord-notation-systems#commands, which still lists Tab and Shift-Tab as ways to move from measure to measure.

But! If I scroll to the top of the page, I see that these are instructions for MuseScore 3, not MuseScore 4. I see, "For MuseScore 4 users, see Chord notation systems." I click on the "Chord notation systems" link, and I'm brought to https://musescore.org/en/search/site?f%5B0%5D=type%3Abook4&keys=Chord%2… - glancing at the first couple of links ("Changes for MDL percussion"? Ah, that's surely what I'm looking for!), it's clear that there's no useful information on that page.

Aside from improving MuseScore's website's SEO (and I'm not sure to what extent that's possible), it would be helpful to have a working link at the top of the MS3 page that would bring a confused user such as myself to a relevant page.

Thanks to everyone involved for their work making such a wonderful and useful piece of software!

Consider not using Google to search for things about MusScore. Up to you, of course. If you go to the top of this page, scroll over Support and select Handbook. That takes to version 4 handbook. Then consider what chord symbols are. They are Text. Select Text and scroll down to Chord Symbols.

I'll keep this in mind for the future. I do think, though, that Google will be the first recourse for many people with questions about MuseScore. Personally, if I'm wondering about a hotkey, say, for another app I'm using, or for a command to accomplish a particular task, Google is usually my starting point, and it tends to serve me pretty well.

In any case, my question is already answered, so I don't expect to be looking this up again any time soon. I do think updating the link on https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/chord-notation-systems could be useful for MS4 users in the future wanting to learn more about chord entry who happen to stumble upon this page. I know that MS doesn't have much control over which pages show up in search results, but the MS community does have control at least of internal links in the software's documentation. I would much rather new users come away from their first MS experience thinking, "this is software that is powerful and performant, with excellent documentation, and it's also free and open-source" rather than "this is software whose documentation contains lots of dead links."

This thought did occur to me! However, when I try to edit https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/chord-notation-systems, the first line of text I see is A __chord notation__ is an abbreviated way of representing musical chord and harmony. It seems that the material above this line in the article (i.e., "This page shows old instructions for MuseScore 3...", as well as the table of contents) is automatically generated by... Drupal, I'm guessing?

This suggests that the site's configuration would need to be changed in order to allow users to change the link to point to a specific MS4 page, rather than the current, automatically generated link to a page of search results. I have a bit of experience with Drupal, but I doubt I have the necessary permissions to make this change myself.
