Cannot place notes?

I am completely dumbfounded on this issue.

For starters, I am currently on a MacBook however I had this issue on a Windows PC (might be user error on this one). As soon as I create a new score I am completely unable to add any notes. I can enter note input mode but am unable to add any notes.

Which note input mode have you selected - steptime, repitch, rhythm, real time, insert?

How are you trying to enter the notes - PC keyboard, midi keyboard, mouse?
