double dot

I am keying in a sonata where a quarter note is followed by two dots (..) and I don't know how enter that. I looked at the shortcuts, and it shows the quarter note .. but when I try to create a shortcut key combination, the field is grayed out and won't accept anything. Does anyone know how to enter this?
