long first Volta
how do I edit a first Volta to extend over multiple measures over 3 staves. I can only get mine to instal for 1 measure

Place the volta on the leftmost measure then [Shift] - RightArrow to extend it.
Are you selecting all of the measures before applying the volta? I just tried it, and it worked over 3 systems. I'm on a Mac, OS 13.6

And, of course, that works very well, and for many that is the better solution.
I'm more of a click on something and then use keys to change things rather than use the mouse to select a range but that's just my preference.
