Sounds like a know problem with 1.3 and Mavericks/Yosemite, you could try to use 1.2 instead, or 2.0 Beta 2 (or a later nightly build)

Thanks is there another way to delete whole measures without using the menu option?

Well, there is the keybaord shortcut Cmd+Fn+Delete (I think that's the Mac version), but it's the same command internally and will suffwr the same bug. Downgrading to MuseScore 1.2 is the best workaround until 2.0 is released 9although you are welcome to use the beta if you don't mind living on the edge a bit).
