Sound not playing, playback buttons greyed out.
MuseScore 3, Windows 10.0.18363 Build 18363
I have had this problem ever since installing MuseScore on my computer a few days ago.
I've tried:
Factory Reset
Updating Sound Drivers
Restarting Audio and MIDI Devices
Unticking 'Exclusive Access'
I cannot find MuseScore in my volume mixer

I have tried everything on that in my own research, nothing worked.

When you open a score and enter notes, do the notes sound as you enter them into the score?

No they do not. And I/O is empty.
What version of MuseScore 3? (MuseScore three point what)
Have you tried to re-boot your computer?
Also...
In Windows 10 Control Panel -> Programs -> Uninstall a program select MuseScore 3 and use the 'Repair' option.

3.6
When I do that, I get this pop up:

Do you have any more suggestions? I'm getting a bit desperate.

As that dialog says, you need to tell Windows the path to the MSI file for the program you are trying to uninstall. If you don't know where it is or if you previously deleted it, just download it again.

So I should just uninstall and reinstall MuseScore?

yes
I have the same thing. Buttons greyed out. But it worked before the most recent update.

Did you try all of the suggestions in the article linked above? If so, which OS? What settings in Edit / Preferences / I/O?

Mine just fixed itself, or updated when I restarted the whole computer.
Seems the same problem that me and other people are experiencing. https://musescore.org/en/node/315868
I've tried everything suggested with no result. I hope this is something that is going to be addressed since at the moment I'm unable to use the program.

We'd love to address it, but so far no one has been able to come up with precise steps to reproduce the problem. It either happens or it doesn't, it seems, and so far its never happened on any system any of us developers have seen, so we can't really debug it. If someone manages to figure out how to reproduce it - to find the series of commands we need to execute, drivers we need to install, or whatever - then we can begin to investigate further. So we're kind of dependent on those users who have experienced this prolbem to help out in the detective work by doing more experimentation on their own systems - updating drivers, changing audio settings, uninstalling other programs, etc.

I have the same problem: no sound. But Find out, that in the mixer there are for each sounds 2 possibilities, for example "Flute" and "Flute expr.". All the sounds with the "expr." doesn't work. Unfortunately muse score choose by default the wrong sounds if you do that directly in the score. If you choose "flute", muse score choose in reality "flute expr.", but you see that only in the mixer view. If you don't change the instruments in the mixer, you won't hear nothing.

To be clear: the expr sounds do work by default. But if you've installed some soundfont other than the default, we can't guarantee it supports the same sounds we do. My guess is that is what is happening. So you might need to try other soundfonts, or try different settings the Dynamics tab of the Synthesizer window that are a better fit for your soundfont.
By default, if you add a flute, it just works.
In any case, though, this is kind of a different issue if you are experiencing soundfont / dynamic incompatibilities, your play button wouldn't be disabled. That indicates an incompatibility or conflict with an audio driver somehow, and that is what we still haven't identified.

To reproduce the problem, you'd have to restart audio and MIDI devices while playing a score. The heavier the better.
I think I experienced(and fixed)the problem. What I did was(in steps):
select JACK audio server(under Edit-preferences-I/O)
Apply the change
close musescore(and preferences)
rearrange my audio devices(unplugged)
open(start) musescore
restart Audio and MIDI devices(under Edit-preferences-I/O)
change back from JACK to PortAudio
restart Audio and MIDI devices again
apply the change
close preferences
click a random note
open preferences
restart Audio and MIDI devices again
Then it appeared again.
Hope it helped!

Turns out, if there's a new device that musescore can't identify, the audio system malfunctions and the buttons grey out.
Try deleting the audio driver from windows device manager, or run the audio troubleshooter to fix the device that's causing the problem!
