Fault on PDF download from MyScores?

• Apr 26, 2022 - 15:06

I am not sure that this is the correct forum for this, but if not, then please direct me...

Someone has tried to download my score "Tea For Two for String Quartet" (score 6043018) in pdf format, with only partial success. We have exchanged several messages about the problem. The whole score downloads correctly, but the 2 violin parts do not. Violin 2 becomes a second copy of violin 1. I have tried the same download and come upon the same problem. I have done some experimenting with others of my scores (eg Misty - score 6565768) , and found other issues such as simply not being able to download individual parts due to file errors - the whole score downloads correctly. I have no problems downloading to MS itself. There just seems to be an issue with downloading individual parts in pdf format. Is this a known bug?
Thank you.

As far as the MuseScore software is concerned, why not re-name your parts to 'Violin 1' and 'Violin 2' in Staff/Part Properties? Then, when parts are generated, they all have different names, with different pdf's created when downloaded.

Sounds like you are talking about downlaoding from a website? Is it called MyScores, or are you talking about musescore.com? Either way, for any issue involving downloading from a score-sharing website, you'd have to go over there to that website to ask for help. This site here is for supporting the notation software, but there's nothing anyone here can do about anything having to do with downloads from another website.

Thank you for your attention to this query. I have done some investigations and I think I now understand what is going on.

  1. If you upload just the whole score without individual parts then others can only download a pdf for the whole score as a pdf. Individual parts are not available. (They can of course download the MS version!!)

  2. If you upload a score plus all or some of the individual parts, then you can download individual parts as pdf's, BUT, if there are 2 parts that share the same name eg "Violin", then only the first one will download. Only those parts that have been uploaded can be accessed as pdf's. Trying to download the others gives an error message.
This is what is happening with this score, since I did not upload the score with all uniquely-named individual parts.

The moral of this is to ensure that all parts are uniquely named, eg "Violin 1" "Violin 2", and to upload these along with the complete score. These should then be downloadable as unique pdf's. This is clearly not a bug with MS, but with the website. Perhaps the download facility needs to be tweaked so that only the actual available parts are available to download.
Thank you once again for your input.

Yup, that is right. The problem seems to be with attempting to download pdf versions of the score and parts. It doesn't really affect me, but since the original query was to do with one of my scores, I thought I would investigate. Is it a problem downloading from the website, rather than a problem in MS per se?

The former stems from MuseScore 3.4.2 and doesn't have any parts.

The latter stems from MuseScore 3.6.2 and has 2 parts, Guitar and Solo Viola, but has 4 more potential parts.

On musescore.com the backend does generate all parts for PDF download for you.

For the former indeed it seems to get that wrong, and generating the PDF for violin 1 twice while ommitting the one for violin 2. Might be a problem long fixed?
Actually no, happens even today, when uploading the score again and with 3.6.2.

For the latter it seems to get something wrong too, the 2 exosint parts download as PDF just fine, the other ones (which should have been generated on musescore.com) don't at all (or rather report as being broken)

So both definitely are worth being reported to/on muescore.com, seems a serious bug to me.

A possible workaround, to pre-generate all parts (File > Parts > All parts) before uploading doesn't seem to help, it still confuse violin 2 for violin 1!
