Trouble with measure spacing
As you can see at the beginning of this system, there are a series of grace notes leading up to the first chord. Why is it crowding up against the key signature and clefs? How can I fix this?

What will be helpful for us to offer possible fixes, is to have you attach your score here. We can then look with different eyes what is notated at that measure.
The list of issues with grace notes is very long - they don't behave like regular notes for the most part. To fix this, add leading space (Properties > Appearance > Leading space) to the first grace note.
