Corrupt files: why?

• Mar 16, 2023 - 10:25

Why do so many corruptions appear in scores? is it something i'm doing wrong or is it software/hardware related? There is a lot to read about workarounds and the like, but how can you prevent this? All this hassle is very frustrating and a waste of time, so prevention could be the best way to act. How?

  1. Always have the latest release of your chosen version of MuseScore. For MS3 this is ver 3.6.2, and for MS4 it is currently ver 4.0.2.
  2. Are you using MS4? If so, you need to understand that MS4 is still at a very early stage in its life. MS 4.0.0 represented a major rewrite of the code, so it inevitably has a number of unresolved bugs (some of which can cause corruptions). We have already seen two bug correction releases (4.0.1 and 4.0.2).
  3. Are you really familiar with the Handbooks?
    MS3: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3
    MS4: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/4
  4. Try to identify the keystrokes which lead up to a corruption in your score.
  5. Post an example of your corrupted score on the forum, with "steps to recreate".

Thank you Daniel. I have very much respect for the people developping MS and am very grateful: it is great and the sounds are great. In my last 'bad' experience I made an orchestral score (a big one) in 4.0.0 (firstly in 3....), than further on in 4.0.1 and now upgrading to 4.0.2 have many different issues. For example the pizzicati don't work anymore, the sopranos are singing half a beat too late in some parts ... so I went back to 4.0.1 at the moment. The upgrade now tells me that practically the whole Flute 1 is disrupted and I really don't see what the problem is. It's all correct at sight looking at the score. Is there something that corrupts the file when saving?

Ok, I'll find a way around it, but my question was: while putting in a score correctly, why there are so many mistakes afterwards when reloading, and how to prevent this. Also, the note 'your file could get lost' (or so) in the report really scares me off :-)
