Support two "independent" linked staves for one instrument

• Aug 20, 2023 - 00:10

I'm working on transcribing some bass parts from songs. It'd be really nice in some cases to be able to have two tablature staves, one for 4-string and one for 5-string. I'd like both of these staves to be linked to the same notation staff, but allow for separate fingerings. Right now if I create another linked staff, then moving the fingering on the 5-string tab staff also moves it on the 4-string staff.

My workaround is to create a separate tab-only instrument, copy everything from the original to it, and then adjust the fingering. But this is a pain and will make future editing double the work.

Two "independent" linked staves for one instrument seems like an oxymoron.
You are writing for two separate instruments, each with a different number of strings.

Is your "separate tab-only instrument" in a completely different score/file? That would make future editing "double the work" because then you would need to edit 2 different files.
Placing the un-linked tab in the same score would keep future editing to a single MuseScore file.

Because 4-string and 5-string bass are different instruments, they will necessarily show different tab fingerings, so future editing will still need to be adjusted individually for each bass.
When it comes to linked tab, even editing a single instrument normally requires adjustment of the default (lowest possible fret) fingerings. Standard notation linked to tab does not always get it right - even for a single instrument. So, editing tab fingerings for two different instruments is not really "double the work".
(Perhaps selling the 4-string could be an option? ;-)

Yes, of course I still need to edit the fingerings for both the 4- and 5-string tab, but they still both share quite a bit such as rhythm, slurs, note markings like staccato, etc.. Not having to manually copy that stuff over would be great.

Is it really so inconceivable that you'd like to present multiple views of the same underlying music?

What do you mean by "manually copy"? Typing all the notes one-by-one into the empty, unlinked TAB staff?
All the notes in the standard notation staff can be selected, copied, and then pasted into the unlinked TAB staff all at once. Then fingerings can be edited where necessary.
(Copy/paste can also be done from the linked TAB staff into the unlinked TAB staff.)

No, not inconceivable. I play fretted stringed instruments and might have the same song notated for say, guitar and 5-string banjo. I would consider linking the treble staff to a TAB staff for only one of them. Then copy paste into the unlinked TAB staff.
--BUT--
If the same song were notated for say, classical guitar (6-string) and electric guitar (6-string), then the TAB staff for each guitar could be linked to the standard notation staff because the TAB staves, after all, would show identical content - though not really necessary to do. One linked TAB is enough.
