Playback Volume
Is there any way to adjust the volume on the playback feature? Even with the volume on my laptop at its loudest, the playback is maybe about half of what I would expect.
Thanks for making this available to masses. I recently decided to attempt to teach myself to play piano, and have found MuseScore to be a pretty decent teaching tool.

It seems that the mixer volume on this machine is separated for MuseScore.
Look at the attachment and do some experiments, Franz.
I find piano too quiet with the standard soundfont. One trick is to right-click on a note, choose Select -> All Similar Elements then right-click again, choose Note Properties and set velocity type to user and velocity to 127 - this cranks the volume all the way up on all the notes.

Easier: select the first note then double click on the fff in the dynamics pallete

Or just use the mixer. That way you can still have dynamics - everything won't have to be uniformly loud.

There's also a Volume slider on Display -> Synthesizer, which you can try.

This is still a problem in v4.0. The playback volume is way softer than most system sounds and in particular than the sound played by selecting a single note. Is it possible to set a persistent default volume for all playback?

MuseScore honors the dynamics in your music. If you a piece for just one or two instruments playing “ppp” then of course it will be very quiet. Whereas a piece for a full orchestra playing “fff” will be very loud. Everything else will be somewhere in between.
Most commercially-produced music has heavy compression applied so that the soft passages aren’t as quiet as they would be in real life. If you prefer that, you can add a compressor effect in the Mixer.

Thanks, Marc. I appreciate that, but I feel that a default volume setting would be useful. Maybe I'm just getting old and deaf, but others seem to have the same query in this topic and others like it.

The previous comments here were regarding MuseScore 1, over ten years ago. So no, this isn't something that comes up often :-). But anyhow, as mentioned, the default volume should already be pretty much max for scores that are actually loud. If the volume were turned up louder, those scores would overload and risk damaging your speaker.
If you only listen to scores that are quiet, you can use the facilities provided by your OS to turn up the volume just for MuseScore if you like - but do be sure to turn down should you ever decide to listen to a loud score.
