I'm not a string player, so I can only offer the advice from "Behind Bars" - the excellent music notation handbook by Elaine Gould (publ. Faber Music).
On p.424 the opening description is as follows:
Scordatura
This is the name given to the practice of re-tuning one or more strings. Indicate the altered open-string pitches at the start of a scordatura passage (see Kurtág extract on p.425).
In a full score, notate scordatura notes at sounding pitch, for convenience. (For clarity, the score should state whether played or sounding pitch is used.)
And p.425 explains in more detail:
There is (an excelent :D) scordatura plugin (for Musescore 3.6.2)

If only scordatura sign is a case, You can create it with symbols from master palette.

how would I create one from the master palette? I tried following instructions from another post, but it didn't work with MS4 as far as I found and only confused me.

You are welcome!
If I would do scordatura one, I would do it in MU 3.6 where Scordatura plugin works, and than open result in MU 4 to have nicer engraving.
But Yes, You need to recreate scordatura sign by hand in MU4.

that's not bad as long as I have snap to grid on. I can work with it.
