My Scores are getting deleted and are disappearing...They're also somehow getting lost to a previous Version of Musescore...

Hi! If anyone can read this and help me out here, that'll be greatly appreciated!!

So I have this project that I've been working on for an Orchestra performance, but the thing is, it has disappeared twice from my computer. Like, I open up Musescore 4.4.4 (the software) and it's completely gone from my projects menu. I couldn't find it anywhere.
So, I ended up just starting over, and decided to create a new one and for awhile it was doing well with no saving issues. But then one day I opened it up to listen to it, and then I closed it (saving any edits I did too) and then later I opened up the software again, but I couldn't find it on the projects page. I restarted my computer looked again through the software, but alas, still nothing.
So I looked through my files, backup files, "mscz", etc., and I found a project with the same name (I'm pretty sure), so I opened it up, and then it says, "Error, cannot read file. File was saved using a newer version of Musescore; go here to download the latest version of Musescore." Which is weird, because I never saved it in an old Musescore or used it in an old version. I'm pretty sure it was the same project that I was working on earlier, cause the name I think was the same (It was Epic Orchestra piece, or smth like that), and it also said that it had been last modified earlier today. So it must've been the one I've been working on. But I can't open it up, and I'm not sure how to open it up in Musescore 4.4.4, when it should already be in Musescore 4.4.4, because that's the version I wrote the project in.
Anyway, it would be super helpful and appreciated if y'all could help me out here, and figure out a solution to restore my score. I was planning to enter some Orchestra Competitions/performances, so I really need to find the piece. I could just start over, but I had a decent amount of progress, plus, I don't want this to be happening again further down the road with future pieces. =\
So I guess my final questions are, What's causing this? How can I find and restore my piece back so I can continue working on it? And how may I prevent this from happening again?
As for further details, I have my Musescore 4 installed on an external hard-drive, along with my projects. But the thing is, I also have a previous version of Musescore on the laptop I'm using. I'm pretty sure I got rid of it and that it's gone though. Idk for sure. I haven't opened the old one up in awhile.

Thank you for your support,
God bless.

Yes sir, I tried that, however, it won't open up.
So I'm thinking that the problem is, that it somehow got mixed up with the musescore on my computer, so it's connected to that one. I have two musescores currently, one on my computer and one on my external hard-drive. The one on my computer hasn't been updated and it is still old, whereas my 2nd one is up to date. So I'm wondering if maybe it got mixed up somehow with the the 1st musescore (the one on my computer). And that I'm trying to open it up through the one on my hard-drive, a newer edition of musescore. The thing is, I was working on it through the musescore that I use on my hard-drive, I'm pretty sure. So I don't know why it would not be opening up.

You say you found the file on the disk, but Musescore says it is saved in a newer version.
This is similar to the situation when you have several versions of Musescore installed on your system.
When you open a file by simply clicking on it with the mouse, it will be opened in the default program. The default program in your case is probably an old version of Musescore. You may also have Musescore 3 installed.
To open this file in the latest version of Musescore 4, launch the latest version of Musescore, select file - open and select the mscz file on the disk

Yes, I do have several musescores installed, but I'm not sure how to get rid of the older versions. The thing is, I had musescore originally installed on my computer, but then I installed a newer and updated version on my hard drive.
Also, when you said to open musescore and then select file, that means I would go to files and open recent up, right? So, file>open, or file>open_recent.
The thing is, I do that and I find my song, Epic Orchestra Piece right there, and so I click it to open it, but it says it can't read file, and "unknown file type"...=\
Here, I sent a picture of what it says, down below.

Wait...Sorry y'all, I just installed the latest version, Musescore 4.5 that was released today. IDK Why, but somehow it just came back when I opened it up.
Like, I opened up the newest musescore, I went to files and selected "open", I found the song, so I clicked the song, but it still just said it couldn't read the file and that it was an unknown file type, like I said earlier.
So I then later I was just looking through my hard-drive files, I saw it so I decided to open it up to see what happened, and then somehow it finally decided to open up and work...Which is so weird, cause it wasn't earlier. I'm not sure how opening it up by clicking the file itself should be or work differently than opening it up through Musescore.
Anyway, from now on, I think I'll be saving it to my email as well, or figure something else out. Cause I don't have any of these issues with my other songs...yet lol
But, thank you guys for all your help and support, I really appreciate it when there are people out there who are willing to help and answer any problems that we may have, so have a wonderful day, and maybe talk to y'all later!

You found the backup file, it has a dot at the beginning and ~ at the end of the file name (.Epic Orchestra Mix.mscz~). It is also located in the hidden .mscbackup folder
1. First, you should find the main file, not the backup.
2. If you can't find the main file, copy .Epic Orchestra Mix.mscz~ to another folder and rename the file: remove the dot and ~ from the file name.
