Dividing melody from accompaniment in a single stave
Hi,
I'm transcribing some piano accompaniment for voice that sometimes has a melody that pops out on top of the accompaniment, and visually I want that melody line to have upward pointing stems while the accompaniment points downward, both on the same the stave. How do I go about splitting these two lines of music? Basically, how do I write two lines of music on the same stave?

VOICES! I got it. Funny how as soon as you ask a question "out loud", you answer it for yourself :-)
Ditto. The best I can do so far is splitting the longer notes into multiple notes with the same pitch to correlate with shorter notes used for the other melody for each beat, and then add a tie to the long note was split into shorter notes to make the note long again without deleting shorter notes in the second melody line in a staff...putzy it is.

Have no fear, I solved it: in the menu bar, to the right, you'll see 1 2 3 4. They are 'voices' on a single stave. By default everything on a stave is 1, but if you want you can create a note, highlight it and click 2, and the bar will create a second voice with that note in it, and you can then add/edit using the rests that have just been created. Done!

If you click on a measure and press N to enter note input mode, you can then select any voice (2, 3 or 4) to enter your notes into. No need to enter the note in voice 1 and change it. BTW besides pressing the number on the tool bar ctrl+alt+2 (3, 4 or 1) will select a voice if you prefer keyboard shortcuts.

Definitely read the Handbook on using Voices - this is the correct solution, makes the job easier, works better, looks correct, etc.
