Synth loading and multiple scores

I thought some of this might just be normal procedural practice. But now I am wondering.
The synthesizer fails to "clear" the soundfonts loaded and the buttons remain greyed out when moving between multiple scores open in the program. The only way to "clear" the synth is to close out the program and restart it. I have been doing it this way for a long time

1) open two or three scores with very different sf's and order
(say, from file-->open recent, open etc,)
2) click view--> synthesizer
(some sort of default may be loaded or not. It doesn't matter)
3) click tab 'load from score' for one of the scores
4) close score and close synth
5) open one of the other scores

**(the load and save buttons are GREYED OUT)

The synth is loaded with the first score loaded. (Setting the first score loaded as default does not un-grey the buttons.)

The only way to clear the synth is to close the program; not just a score. Anyone else forced to work this way?
