text, tremolando, lines.

text input is v glitchy and laborious. can take forever to get the cursor to select everything in the text box, then sometimes won't allow me to change font, and no obvious way of making favourite fonts.

tremolando - this moves around the score after saving - so with a trem on a minim, say, the trem will migrate an inch or so up from where it should be, so constantly needs putting back. something similar happens with lines, say a slur, which will change its shape when file is saved.

it would also be useful to have a dotted line option.

Tremolando = Temolo? These are in the Tremolo palette in the Advanced workspace. Click the word basic below the palettes and select advanced to change workspaces. If you use these, they are reasonably placed. If you don't like the location of one, then (press F8 to open the inspector in necessary and) move it. If these are not the same can you post a picture of one, preferably as a PNG image?

Dotted lines - You can select a line and change the Line style in the inspector (press F8 to turn it on or off).

The font can be changed on a specific text element by right clicking it and selecting Text Properties... and changing the font, justification and several other items. These can be changed on all similar text items, such as staff text, by right clicking and choosing Text Style... There are similarly named items on the context (right click) menu that do very different things, so make sure you select the correct option.

Slurs change their shapes and lines move around when you use the double click and move the endpoint method of adjusting them. This method is meant for minor adjustments to the items. Dragging the end past the next note or before the previous note should never be done. If you want to change which note the line or slur is anchored to (the red dot and line that appears when you select an end dot), use shift + arrows to change the anchor point. It is best to select the first and last note where you want the line or slur to span then double click the line or add the slur (I always press s to add a slur). This way the line or slur will be anchored in the correct place to begin with. This applies to ALL items in the lines palette except the Ambitus. It is important to use this for < type crescendos because they like to move around if you don't follow these instructions. All of this is actually in the manual but not put together to explain it like this. One final note, if something from the line's palette only spans to part of a note, then make it span all of the note, then you can double click it and shorten it to make it look right.

thanks Mike..

with this - "These can be changed on all similar text items, such as staff text, by right clicking and choosing Text Style" - do you mean that I can set a particular style/font etc as default for ALL scores/files I might produce? if not, can I do that, and how?

In regards to the tremolo, you have moved the tremolo lines, probably as soon as you entered them. I suggest that you enter all notes, ornaments lines and so forth before you move anything. This will prevent items from moving when you close and reopen the file. You may also find you need to move fewer items. I click a couple of the tremolo lines and pressed ctrl+r to reset them to their original positions and they definitely look better than before I did that.

Ok, I think we're getting somewhere - yes, I did move the trem lines, because, as you can see from the attached (b7) the trem (i.e. when it is created, before being moved at all) collides with the natural accidental. so my question now is how can I get the trem positioned so it doesn't collide in this way, and stays where I put it? NB I've tried increasing the stretch but can't see how to do this so that the 2 notes forming the trem are moved further apart.

Sorry, I didn't double check the results when I closed and reopened it. That looks like a bug, because the inspector is automatically changing the vertical offset to -3.5. Changing the vertical offset to 3.5 made it correct when I saved and reopened it. I don't see any place to adjust the default settings on a tremolo so the workaround is required.

I suggest that you submit a bug report here with a priority of normal. Copy the address to this discussion and paste it into your report saying it was discussed here.

I tried it on your file and some other files that had a different vertical offset and I got a 0 vertical offset after I saved, closed and opened the file. You need to make sure that if MuseScore makes the offset -3.25 you change it to 3.25. If MuseScore makes it 1.25, you make it -1.25 and so forth.

sorry, none of this working for me. if I do what you suggest and then make any further edits (esp re other trem positions) etc it reverts to the 'bad' offset. seems like a serious problem that's been around for a while. also you can't always do a precise offset reverse (you might get 1.30 not 1.25). and really there shouldn't be a difference between moving objects manually and changing the settings, should there?

I enter the tremolo and change the horizontal offset to -1. Save, close then open and look at the vertical offset. I change the Vertical offset (I just added or deleted a - sign) then save, close and open and the Vertical offset is back to zero. The vertical offset changes from one situation to another so you can't just start by changing the vertical offset also.

That does not really surprise me. I normally advise people to enter the entire score before they change any defaults on locations or displays for this very reason. You never know which edit will cause the score to be drastically changed. I also advise putting a hard system break at the end of each system during the edit phase to prevent measures from moving between systems and ruining all of the edits you just did.
