Staff lines appear lighter

• Oct 9, 2018 - 23:21

2 of the 5 staff lines appear lighter in both the MuseScore file and the pdf I converted it to. I checked and the 'invisible staff lines' is not checked on the Staff Properties page. I'm using MS ver. 2.3.2 Revision 4592407 on a Macbook Pro with High Sierra ver. 10.13.6.

They appear lighter?
It could be a monitor display issue.

However...
Do they appear lighter when zoomed in to, say, 300% ... or do they look normal (both score and pdf)?

What about printing? Is it OK?

Thanks for reply. I didn't think it was a monitor viewing issue because I can move the image around the screen, and the top line and 4th line down of the staff (of the 2nd line of music) consistently appear lighter (see screenshot attached) wherever I move it to, and the pdf has the same 2 lines lighter as the MS file. If it's a problem with these thin lines being too pixelated, why aren't all the lines appearing lighter then?

However, zooming in to 300% does seems to bring back the darkness, and printing the file seems to bring back the darkness & consistency too. So apparently the problem is solved as long as I can remember that this lightness is a false alarm. I am curious if they appear lighter on your (or others') screen, too, when you open the MS file or pdf at 100%...or the attached screenshot.

If I recall correctly, at least once before I had this problem (months back), and the random lightness did show up in the printing too, when I emailed someone the file and they printed it.

Thanks for your help! Additional insights would be appreciated if you have any.

Different monitors, different drivers, and different OS's handle drawing thin lines differently, so what you see on your monitor on your system might not be what others see even looking at the same image. On my system, your PDF looks perfect at any magnification. Your PNG looks a little fuzzy if I zoom way in, but that's not really a good test because normally when you zoom within MuseScore, it redraws the lines, it doesn't just take the same thin line and magnify it bigger. Certainly your MSCZ file looks fine, as there is nothing about the MSCZ file that could possibly be otherwise.

Anyhow, if it's a problem, you can try going to Edit / Preferences / Canvas and toggle the "Draw antialiased" setting. On my system having this disabled doesn't look good, but it's possible on other systems it might actually help, depending on the specifics of the monitor/driver/OS.

BTW, are you really sure you saw problems with printing? If so, that could have been an issue with the printer. If you find an example of this feel free that file and a scan of the print.
