Too many rests in voice 1
Hello,
My file has too many rests in voice 1. I do not know how it got to that point. How can I get rid of the unnecessary rests? Is there a way to "normalize"?
Thanks,
Martin

You can't delete rests from voice 1, only hide these rests (via shortcut "del" or "v" or inside the inspector).
Better is to exchange these voices (see:https://musescore.org/en/handbook/voices#exchange-voices) so you can delete these rests inside voices 2-4.
because you used voices 3 and 4 in the 2nsd staff rather than voice 1 and 2.

Oh, thanks. But why is there 2 rests on voice 1 in the first and second staff in the first place. There was already rests there... why a second one? Is this a bug? If it's a bug, I understand, but if I did something wrong, I'd like to know how to do it right.

Because voice 1 is always there.

For voice 1 it's necessary that's there a note or a rest inside a measure, so that's match with the measure length. For measure 2-4 it's possible to delete rests (in Jojo's attached score the rests, which grayed out).

No those voice 2 rests are not deleted, but made invisible, so the voice 1 rests move to the center of the staff. If you delete the voice 2 rests (which is possible) this would not happen and you'd need to move the voice 1 rests down yourself.
I did however I'm the 2nd staff after swapping voice 1 with 3 and 2 with 4 remove the voice 3 rests.

Interesting, I remembered it different (or I'm just to tired;-). You're right, there is a different behavior if I deselect for a rest of a different voice (apart from voice 1) visible or delete this rest concerning the position of the rest in voice 1 and wonder if there's a reason.

The whole thing is very hard for me to understand. Maybe I am missing something fundamental.
1) For my understanding, how many sets of voices are there (four voices, but is this repeated on each staff)?
2) Is there a set of 4 voices for the upper staff, and another set of 4 for the lower staff (same question worded differently)?
3) I have attached a simple example. There are notes for all voices, but rests do show up for voice 1. I still do not understand what I did wrong, and how to avoid my mistake. Can you explain how to enter this properly without having to fix it afterwards please?

There are a maximum of 4 voices per staff, with voice 1 being mandatory.
So for every staff start with voice 1
Just read https://musescore.org/en/handbook/Voices understand

Your error in reasoning:
Voices means you can use up to 4 voices for each single staff. But you attached two separate staffs.
For each single staff start with voice 1 and add if necessary voice 2, 3 or 4 - but only if it's necessary.
Hope, it's more clear for you.

As explained above, there are up to four voices for each staff, and each staff always starts with voice 1, which always must contain the proper number of beats (notes and/or rests). The other voices are optional, but should generally be added in order.
What you did wrong in your example is not use voice 1 in the bottom staff. You left the rest in voice 1 alone, which is why it is still there, and then you added notes to voices 3 & 4. Don't do that. You only need two voices for that staff, they should be voices 1 & 2. In particular, you should have entered the tenor into voice 1, the bass into voice 2, just as you used voices 1 & 2 for the soprano and alto on the top staff.
To fix a score in which you have already entered things incorrectly, use Edit / Tools / Voices to move the contents of voice 3 to voice 1, and voice 4 to voice 2. You can then delete any rests left behind in voices 3 & 4.
