Dynamics - range of application

I'm not sure I'm using dynamics (e.g. "ff") with the correct interpretation. When I add a dynamics text to a note in a staff, for how long will the playback function obey and execute that dynamics? for just the note, for just that beat, for the rest of the bar or for the rest of the staff until another dynamics text modify the first one?
Also, which dynamics text will bring back the default velocity for notes (previously modified by, for example, "ff")? I'm assuming, based on tests, that it is "mf". Is that correct?

There are some things that can change the dynamic of notes, like crescendos and changing the velocity of a singe note. If you're seeing something other than the dynamic lasting until a dynamic change, I suggest you attach your score and tell us what you hear.

In general, MuseScore's playback should be more or less the same as an actual human musicians' interpretation. Simple dynamics stay in effect until changed by another, dynamics like sfz are like exceptions that apply to a single note. As for default dynamic, you should not depend on there being any such thing. If you are how loud something is played, put in an explicit dynamic marking. Otherwise, regardless of what any one particular version of MuseScore might happen to do by default, every person playing it will possibly do something different. if you want it to start mf, add an mf at the beginning.
