"Pedal" does not seem to sustain the sound
I marked in "pedal", the one that has a solid line and the turned up end to mark where it stops, but it does not act like a pedal is being used. Instead, the instrument plays very separate-sounding notes, like a harpsichord. Is the program able to blur the sounds together? If so, where can I find that feature?

Assuming you added the line correctly - so the end anchor is actually attached to the where you want it to end, not just dragged to appear as if it were - it should work just fine. Of course, assuming this is piano, the instrument doesn't have infinite sustain, it's still going to die out eventually.
If you're still having trouble, please attach the score so we can understand and assist better.

Oops. I didn't exactly drag it, but I did move the end little blue square by using the sideways arrow. So, yes, the anchor dot is still back in Kansas, marking that spot where it first appeared. How do I persuade that dot to move to the right a measure or two?

To apply it correctly from the start: first select the range, then double click the palette.
To change the length afterwards: Shift + ←/→
