Copy Lyrics from Melody to Harmony
Hi All,
I know that lyrics are "tied" to notes in a measure. The problem I have is that typically the harmony has a different number of notes in a measure than the corresponding melody measure. I was wondering if there is a global way of copying the lyrics from the melody to the harmony, regardless of the number of notes in corresponding measures? That would mean copying the lyrics from the melody to the harmony where all the words in each measure of the melody are copied into each corresponding measure of the harmony even if there are a different number of notes in the melody measure and the corresponding harmony measure. I usually break a song into three or four parts (I am in an all accordion band with 5 members). I start with the "All Parts" version which contains the lyrics usually in the first part. I then edit that version, multiple times, to construct 3 or 4 separate Musescore files, each containing a separate part. I do this since it cuts down on the number of pages we each have and the amount page turnings we have to do while playing. We sometimes sing (if you allow me to call it that) as we play. So, I need the words on each part. If this is unavailable now, maybe a future feature can be to copy the lyrics from one part where all the words in each measure of that part are copied into each corresponding measure of other parts even if there are a different number of notes in the corresponding measures for those parts.

What do you mean by harmony? Chord symbol? Or accompaniment, like in a piano staff?

I usually make melody the 1st part and harmony the 2nd part, then bass (all accordion band). Attached is a file example. I would like to get the lyrics under 2nd part so when I make separate files for 1st and 2nd parts for the band members,, the correct words are in each measure of the 2nd part even thought there are different number of notes in the 2nd part measure.

Right click on a syllable;
Select->More, in the dialog box choose same subtype;
Copy;
Select the destination note->Paste.
But you'll have to adjust everything a bit.

I was trying to find out if there is a way without having to adjust a bit. It appears there is not.
Thanks for replying.

Lyrics attach to notes, so as long as your 'harmonies' (accompaniement?) has a different rhythm, you can't move or copy the lyrics there in any sensible form or shape, and it wouldn't make sense anyhow.

We often all sing the words (to the melody) whether we play melody or harmony. It takes practice, but we do it. I just need the words in the harmony measures so I know what to sing. There are actually 5 of us and sometimes I break a song into as many as 4 different parts. But we all still have to sing the song!
Thanks for your help. I will figure something out.

If there aren't the same number of notes, then there is no way for MsueScore know which notes line up with which. The best you can do is copy individual sections that do line up.
But FWIW, you shouldn't need to be going to all the trouble you are describing. Just create a full score using the SATB template (or otherwise setting up a score with multiple staves) then generate the parts automatically with File / Parts.

I understand that If there aren't the same number of notes, then there is no way for MuseScore to know which notes line up with which words. I was suggesting that we have a new option (if it does not already exist). In addition to option 1 where words are assigned to notes we have option 2 where words are assigned to measures (which can be done based on knowing the notes in each measure). So, first, lyrics are entered as in option 1 (words corresponding to notes) then we have an option where for all the notes in a given measure, all the corresponding words are assigned to that measure. This could be done by a Musescore software modification. Then, under option 2, we can copy the words corresponding to each measure of 1st part into each measure of 2nd part, and/or 3rd part, etc.
I was not sure if Musescore already did this, but if not, I meant to suggest this as an enhancement.
Attached is a file where I would like to have the lyrics under both parts 1 and 2.
Trickery and illusions.
When starting a "harmony" line, start by copying over your melody line, which includes all the lyrics.
Then in the destination perform a switch voices command, so voice 1 remains available for notating what you want.
Use the selection filter to select everything that isn't lyrics and not voice 1, then using the inspector mark it invisible.
