Add them in the header or footer. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/score-properties#header-footer for more information. Note that the yellow box shows what the different codes do. The ones affecting page numbers are $p, $N and $P...$n might be relevant also.

thanks. i seem to remember there was a simpler way to do this, just something with one click and pages all numbered themselves.

If you created your score with a template that includes page numbers, it's automatic. I think all of the default templates have page numbers. If you select instruments, you have to do it manually.

Even then it happens automatically

I never noticed that before. MuseScore always puts the page numbers at the bottom of the pages by default after page 1.

Right, the default is for pages to be numbered (at the bottom), only if you are using a custom template or are working with a score in which someone previously turned them off would you not see page numbers. Except - the default is not to show the page number on the first page, so you won't see page numbers until your score reaches page 2.

well,i couldn't find this info in the handbook.
Anyhow, i jjust found the page numbers on the score, starting on page 2, at the bottom, but it is on the left side, then page 3 is on bottom at right side, etc. is this correct?
the numbers are also pretty small; is their an easy way to make them a little larger?

This is correct. They will be on the outside of the page if bound in a book. To make them larger use the Menu Format->Style, select text style then footer and change the text size. Note, if you move them to the header you will want to edit the header size.

don't understand about on outside if bound. they are printed on one side of the paper only, and appear on alternate sides of the page.

If you print it to put it in a book with printing on front and back, this is the proper place to put the page numbers. This is the most common way to bind a book.

not interested in a book, need it for musicians to play from.

Feel free to put the page numbers wherever you want them. move the $p (or whatever letter) to the place you want page numbers. In the middle might be the best place for your purpose.

FWIW, the outer margins also make sense if you are taping your parts together in sets of two pages, which is also pretty common. I'm personally not a taper, but some I know are religious about this

See the link provided in the very first response you got - it's documented on the page for headers and footers.
