not sure what i mean. i would like the musician to do a free improv using certain notes which i would like to specify, which notes could be a standard chord or otherwise.

yes but only certain ones and not necessaily the ones i want. one way to do thismay be to indicate the pitches by noteheads with xes in them in the first measure, slashes in subsequent measures, and text above saying free jazz improv with those pitches and rests

See for example what I did in https://musescore.com/marcsabatella/scores/30241, that shows use of a scale for improve (stemless quarter notes rather than x heads, I find that more common, but either works). it also shows slash notation, but FWIW, I did this before MsueScore actually supported slash notation; I faked it instead. Now it's as easy as Tools / Fill with Slashes.

thanks. that looks kool! i used the slashes because i wanted to leave the duration open, but since the notes i wanted them to play either were not part of a chord, or made up a chord which i could not identify, i just put the circle with x in the center where the notes i wanted were, plus text over saying free jazz improv with choice of notes and optional rests.

How did you do the stemless quarter notes to indicate the scale? Is it possible to do with half note heads and quarter note heads combined? I would like to make charts like in the Aebersold books

The Inspector (re-open from View menu if you previously closed it) lets you change noteheads and make notes stemless.
