thanks a lot.
it worked except for the last measure but I'm happy.
I still don't understand why it happens. I started with a score for two flutes and it looked normal (i.e. narrow enough, one page) then I raised the first flute one octave and it became wide (few measures occupied a full row).

Likely in raising an octave, a lot of notes previously within the staff now are above it. Therefore they require ledger lines, which ever so slightly increase the width they require within a measure.
