Can't Save Files
I just upgraded from an older version of musescore to 2.0.1. Every time I try to save a file I get a message saying:
Open Temp File
/Billie's_Bounce_Now's_the_TIme.mscz.temp
failed: Permission denied
I am running it on OS X 10.9.3.
Comments
Looks like that is a file that resulted from recovering from a previous crash. Do you know what caused the crash?
Anyhow, I am guesisng the problem is the "temp" in the filename. Do a save as and give it a valid filename - ending in MSCZ.

To my knowledge there wasn't a crash.
I tried to do a save as and named the file with MSCZ selected as the file type then got this message:
Open File
/Now's the Time.mscz
failed: Permission denied
Followed by this message:
Cannot write into /Now's the Time.mscz
If I try to save again I just get this message again
Open Temp File
/Billie's_Bounce_Now's_the_Time.mscz.temp
failed: Permission denied

Don't try to save to / then but into your own $HOME?

Thanks a lot, I saved the file into My Documents and it seems to have worked

Ah, now I get it; the "temp" was added as a result of the failed save into "/". Glad to hear there was no crash :-)

Thanks a lot :)
I'm having the same issue where it will give me a "Permission Denied" message when I try, but nowhere I try to save to will it change. I really don't wanna lose all this work I did but it won't change, is there something i'm not following?

"Save online" for the rescue?
In reply to "Save online" for the rescue? by Jojo-Schmitz
That seems to have worked fine, thank you! I guess i'll just have to stick to online saves to my musescore account, because it just won't save in the actual program for anything

Maybe https://musescore.org/en/handbook/revert-factory-settings helps, or restarting your PC.
What OS are you using?

Can you post a screen shot of the permission denied message? My guess is it will be naming something other than the score itself, but instead a temp file, or it will be a different folder than you expect. This sort of thing can happen as the result of a previous crash, also if your file or the folder is marked read only, or perhaps if you disk is full. In any of these cases we should be able to lead you to a solution, but we'd need more information, hence the request for a screenshot.

I'm on a mac OS X 10.11.6. Slightly earlier version of a file saved but later version won't. Tried renaming, didn't help. Have gotten "permission denied" message and the like and had multiple crashes while trying to deal with the problem. At this point, an't seem to get "permission denied" message any more so can't reproduce it (sorry). Finally, afraid to reboot with chance of losing everything. I can fix up the earlier version but suspect that if I send it to my editor, he won't be able to download or open the file. Spotlight search can't find any version. Any ideas, anyone?

Which version of MuseScore? If you aren't getting the error any more, does that mean everything is OK and you can save? if not, what exactly is the problem? What happens if you use Save As?
In reply to Which version of MuseScore? … by Marc Sabatella
Using MuseScore 2.1.0, Revision 871c8ce. Could save file to Desktop but nowhere else (via Save As), also couldn't rename. Did some further tinkering and managed to disable Safari (wouldn't open). Happy ending of sorts: rebooted and everything works again.

I recently updated from ver 2 to ver 3 latest. It won't allow me to save, or save as. I gives an error message "file not found. Check the file name and try again. "
See my file attachment.

Here another error message when I try to save. Says "bad file descriptor"
In reply to Here another error message… by victor pierobon
These are error messages given to us by Windows when trying to save the file. Usually this indicates a permissions problem.
Can you try saving in your regular Documents folder and see how that goes?

Me, too. I can't seem to save either modifications to existing musescore files or new ones with the latest version I just installed (OS: Windows 10 (10.0), Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (32-bit): 3.4.2.9788, revision: 148e43f). Alas, a mystery to me.

Why using a 32bit MuseScore on a 64bit Windows?

And the same counterquestion then applies to you as well.
To which folder are you attempting to save?
Does it work if you try saving to desktop or just the "My Documents" folder?

Thanks for catching that and your comments. Alas, the plot thickens. I un-installed the 32-bit version and installed the 64 version (below). The same issue remained when trying to save the file in /Documents or in /Musescore. However, something interesting happened when I tried to save it in C:. Musescore recommended saving the file in /Admin - which I did and the file did save there. Perhaps it's a permission issue. Beyond me :-)

None of those are normal/valid pathnames in Windows. The default should be C:\Users\YourName\Documents\MuseScore3\Scores. Did you try going back to that? Can you post the precise full pathname of the folder you are having problems saving to, and the precise full text of the error message you see?

Thanks for your comments Marc. Understood. Here's my reply plus a screenshot:
Yes, I tried again and still cannot save the music files in these folders:
C:\Users\Admin\Documents
C:\Users\Admin\Documents\MuseScore2
// I suspect the Musescore2 directory is either a remnant of Musescore2 (my prev version) or was created when I installed Musescore3.
However, I am able to save them in:
C:\Users\Admin\
C:\Users\Admin\Musescore // A directory I created.

If your username is Admin, those is all correct
In reply to Thanks for your comments… by utcmuse
Sounds like a permissions problem - are you logged in as user Admin? Can you write to those folders using other programs?
In reply to Sounds like a permissions… by Marc Sabatella
Thank you JoJo and Marc for your replies.
Yes, my username is "Admin" (which I had forgotten until you both reminded me). Yes, I could create a new text file using Notepad and could update it and save the updated file. Also could update it and save the updated file with a new filename.
With regards to a "Permissions problem" (which I'm not so familiar with on Windows), I've attached a screenshot listing the Permissions Properties of the Musescore2/Scores directly in case that might help.
And finally, I also tried re-starting my computer which didn't seem to help wrt to this inability to save updated files in Musescore2/Scores. Perhaps my computer is very special or picky ;-)

What about the permissions of the MuseScore2 directory?
And why would you want to write there in the first place, using MuseScore 3.x?
That MuseScore2 directory indeed most likely is a remnant of you have MuseScore 2.x installed.
In reply to What about the permissions… by Jojo-Schmitz
I noticed the same settings in MuseScore2 (identical to MuseScore2/Scores). Good point. I created a new Documents/MuseScore3 directory and noticed the same inability to save my files.
Perhaps it's a /Documents permission setting issue. Because, it seems I'm able to save files outside the /Documents directory. For example, I could save in ../Desktop
In reply to I noticed the same settings… by utcmuse
Yes, so check those permissions
In reply to Yes, so check those… by Jojo-Schmitz
Because I chose to protect my folders from ramsomware, windows blocks any new applications from accessing my files unless i explicitly i allow them. Windows 10 warms me with a message, which I unfortunately ignored at first, but afterwards noticed and then allowed musescore to allow access to the storage folder it was trying to save my music into.
thanks for your sincere help.
In reply to Yes, so check those… by Jojo-Schmitz
Yes, I forgot to mention that I did check those permissions properties for the "problematic" /Admin/Documents and they look the same those in the screenshot I sent earlier. Likewise for Admin/Desktop (where I can save files). Well, at least, I have a work-around for now - staying outside of /Documents. :-)

Not sure where best to put this answer, but it is a common problem not to be able to save files to your "my documents" folder, or for Musescore to save data such as plugins to this folder (on Windows 10).
The problem can be controlled folder access. A useful, but extremely poorly implemented (in my opinion!) security feature of Windows 10. I have had this problem with Musescore 4 and Open Office on my laptop (but not my desktop, so it does not affect all Windows 10 installations).
This is how to allow a blocked app (such as Musescore 4) to have access to your "My documents" folder:
Allow a blocked app in Windows Security
Controlled folder access in Windows Security reviews the apps that can make changes to files in protected folders. Occasionally, an app that is safe to use will be identified as harmful. This happens because Microsoft wants to keep you safe and will sometimes err on the side of caution; however, this might interfere with how you normally use your PC. You can add an app to the list of safe or allowed apps to prevent them from being blocked.
1
Select Start Windows logo Start button > Settings Gear-shaped Settings icon > Update & Security Circular arrows Sync icon > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
2
Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.
3
Under Controlled folder access, select Manage Controlled folder access.
4
Switch the Controlled folder access setting to On or Off.
