How to add space between the staffs
I know you can change the length of the beams, but is there a way to increase or decrease the space between the staffs so that notes don't overlap other notes or text?

Style ->General ->Page ->Lyrics top margin: increasing the value here will help.

Right-click on the staff-header of the staff below which you want the space, and you can specify additional space to be reserved above that staff.
