I think the current mechanism where space normally moves to the next note - skipping rests - should remain, but it would be not that difficult to allow Ctrl+L to place a single syllable on a rest.

It's curious to write a word on a rest cause it's silent.........If you want you write a note and make it invisible in the inspector
Or enter a note, make it silent and with a cross notehead, to indicate a spoken word.
