time signature appearance

I have created early music scores that are in 6/4 or 3/2, and would like to change the appearance of the time signature to one of the alternatives (a circle or circle with dot) in the time signature properties box. When I do that, nothing happens, and my scores still have the 3/2 or 6/4 time signature. I am working on a mac.
