too many beats per measure
My piece is supposed to be 4/4 time, and the measures have 8 beats. How do I change that?

Perhaps with a little picture ......??? What do you call "beats" in 8 beats ??
My guess is you enabled the special "insert mode", intended specifically for adding extra beats. Don't use that unless that is your goal. For any measures you already did that too, select the extra beats and press Ctrl+Delete to get rid of them, but then go back to the regular step time nite input mode from now on.
