stylus on touch screen

I have and ASUS 2 in 1 Q534U with touch screen and stylus support. When I try to use the stylus, any contact I have with the interface, menu, buttons, note entry results in what seems to be a partial state, as if mouse down (analogously) was registered but mouse up never came. after that point, whatever item was selected no longer responds to the stylus, the item turns gray and is not responsive thereafter.
stylus taps can, however, select notes on the staff and modify them, but since the note value buttons no longer respond, no new notes can be entered.
Finger touches do still work, though, unless an element is grayed out by a previous stylus tap. There are sequences of actions via mouse, touch, keystroke that will re-enable previously gray items. In every case other than existing note modification, though, the stylus sets the element gray and apparently partially activated..
